and Essay Contest – Theme: “Foods of My
Family.”

Area teachers will receive mailers with
instructions for their students and information about
the Key Ingredients
exhibit. The essay is a food-oriented oral history
project. Students will interview a family member
to find out their memories of food, cultural
associations, the significance of a specific food, etc.,
and write down the recipe. Recipes will be added
to the website. Younger students will draw their
impressions. Teachers will also be provided with
the resources available on the Key Ingredients
website.
Posters and essays will be on display
at the County Library and Acorn Hall during the exhibit
and posted on the Key Ingredients
website.

4 “Harvest Tea” 2:30 - 4:30 PM At Acorn Hall
A tea featuring ingredients grown in New
Jersey. Served in Acorn Hall’s beautiful Victorian
dining room the sit-down Afternoon Tea will include
scones with clotted cream and jam, tea sandwiches, a
selection of desserts, and choice of tea. A short
program about the tradition and etiquette of tea will be
presented. The tea is $25 for MCHS members and $30 for
non-members. Space is limited, so advance payment is
required.

The Morris County Historical Society and the
Metropolitan Vintage Dance and Social Club are
sponsoring an Armistice Ball. Period music will be
performed by musicians led by renowned band leader Vince
Giordano. For those new to this type of vintage dancing,
Al and Jan Seabra will lead an afternoon workshop from 2
to 4 p.m. Admission to the workshop is included in the
price of your ball ticket. Tickets are $35 per person or

Arboretum At the Frelinghuysen
Arboretum Food Historiran Judith Krall-Russo
will discuss the history of the Jersey tomato. Discover
where the tomato originated and why it became one of New
Jersey's favorite crops. Find out when New Jersey was
known for its tomato packing industry and what happened
to it. Did you know that tomatoes were considered
poisonous at one time and it was a New Jerseyean who
decided to prove everyone wrong? Hear about heirloom
varieties and modern hybrids and the folklore attached
to this fruit. Sponsored by the New Jersey Council
for the Humanities, a state partner of the National

Collection At Acorn Hall Bring canned
goods and non-perishable food when you visit Acorn Hall
during this time and receive ½ off the admission
price. The Interfaith Food Pantry will receive the
food that is collected. Celebrate the
spirit of seasonal giving and enjoy the opportunity to
view Acorn Hall's renowned Christmas
decorations.

Past, Present and Future of the Mt. Hope Miner’s
Church" 2-4
PM At the
Frelinghuysen
Arboretum The program will focus
on the history of the Mt. Hope Miner’s Church and the
social impact that the mining industry had on Morris
County, it will also provide details on the Morris
County Park Commission’s efforts to restore the Church
and its plans for the future use of the building. The
speakers will be MCHS director Bonnie-Lynn Nadzeika and
Morris County Park Commission Director of Historic Sites
Mark Texel.

13 Exhibit Opening Games Victorians
Played 1
PM At Acorn Hall Visitors will
discover the various sport and game clubs throughout
Morris County in the nineteenth century, from the Morris
County Golf Club to the Morristown Field Club. The
exhibit will feature antique sporting clothes and
equipment. There will also be information about today’s
sports such as tennis and croquet with roots in the
Victorian era. Also included will be parlor games (games
played indoors) and children’s toys and games.

Sunday, April 6 Collection Care for the
Non-Conservator At the Frelinghuysen
Arboretum A workshop for volunteers of
local historical societies and organizations. Attendees
will learn basic information for handling artifacts,
display methods and identification of situations
requiring professional assistance. Speakers will be
professionals from Morris County museums and historical
organizations. Pre-registration required and space is

Victorians Played" 2-4 PM At the
Frelinghuysen
Arboretum A lecture presentation based on the current MCHS
exhibit, the program will focus on sport and gaming in
the Morris County area in the late nineteenth
century. FREE

June 3 Dealing with Difficult
Visitors Part
II 5:30 - 7:30 PM At the Morris County Cultural
Center It’s a museum guide’s
worst nightmare – a guest who makes sexually
inappropriate or bigoted remarks or who can’t keep his
hands off the silverware. To help the staff and
volunteers of small museums and historic sites better
deal with these visitors, the Morris County Heritage
Commission and the Morris County Historical Society are
offering a workshop on “Dealing with Difficult Visitors
(Part II).” The session will be held in the
auditorium of the Morris County Cultural Center, 300
Mendham Road (County Route 510), Morris Township, on
Tuesday, June 3, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Registration will
begin at 5:30 and light refreshments will be
available.

28 Yard Sale At Acorn
Hall The
Morris County Historical Society will be holding a sale
of antiques, vintage clothing, textiles, books,
collectibles, and more on the lawn of historic Acorn
Hall on Saturday, June 28. Buyers can choose from
a wide selection of 19th and early
20th century clothing, undergarments, and
accessories including gloves, hats, and purses.
Lamps and small furniture pieces will also be available.
For more contemporary bargain-hunters, there will also
be a flea market table offering more recent,
20th century items including books, clothing,
and decorative items. Light
refreshments will be sold. All proceeds benefit
the programs of the Morris County Historical Society and
the preservation of Acorn Hall. There will be no
early bird sales. In case of rain, the sale will
be held on the porches and in the carriage house of
Acorn Hall.

family fun at Acorn Hall. Special kids tours of Acorn
Hall, games on the lawn, Victorian dress up, tea and
cookies, and a take-home craft. Regular admission
prices apply.

24 Exhibit Opening "Who's Minding the Store?" &
Member's Garden Party 1-4 PM At Acorn Hall The
opening of “Who’s Minding the Store?” will take place at
the Society’s annual Garden Party and feature a “Pie Contest” and “Home-grown Tomato
Competition.” A raffle will include a gift
certificate to a local food business and food-related
merchandise. "Who's Minding
the Store?" is a traveling exhibit from the Jewish
Historical Society of Metrowest. A
reconstructed store from Morris County’s earlier days,
the exhibit will demonstrate how people once shopped for
food and other essentials. The exhibit will be
augmented with agricultural, dining, and food
merchandising artifacts from the collection of the
Morris County Historical Society.
MCHS member's are welcome
to bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawn of Acorn Hall.
Tea and dessert will be served.
