A program for homeschoolers at Acorn Hall and Macculloch Hall, Back to School Days will focus on children's lives in the 1800s. Visit Mr. Macculloch's Latin School for a lesson, then visit Acorn Hall for afterschool fun and games. Please call for additional information and to make reservations. (973) 267-3465

Harvest Tea

Enjoy a three course, sit down tea served amid the splendor of Acorn Hall. Jersey grown foods will be highlighted as we celebrate the harvest season. Seating is limited, reservations are required. $25 for MCHS members, $30 for non-members.

A House of Mourning

At Acorn Hall
Visitors to Acorn Hall will enter a “house of mourning,” decorated as though a 19th-century wake is in progress.  The front doors will be adorned with floral wreaths indicating that death has visited the house.  Inside, mirrors will be draped with black crepe, and clocks will be stopped.  A handmade “toe-pincher” coffin will be displayed in the front parlor. Regular admission fees apply.

Local Harvest: North Jersey Farms, Food and Family

Meet some of the New Jersey farmers and artisans who produce the food on your table at “Local Harvest: North Jersey Farms, Food, and Families,” a celebration of the farms of northern New Jersey. Meet farmers, watch chef demos, sample and purchase local food, and learn about north Jersey’s agricultural heritage past and present.  Learn about CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and sign up for a share of the 2009 harvest.  Co-sponsored by the Morris County Historical Society and the Northern New Jersey chapter of Slow Food USA. Made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. *Snow date, Saturday, January 24*

Highlights include never before seen pieces from the Society's collection,
including 19th century Japanese watercolors, mythological engravings and portraits.

Workshop - Fonts to Frames, Exhibit Design and Installation on a Budget

At the Morris County Cultural Center
The Morris County Historical Society and the Morris County Heritage Commission are sponsoring a workshop on exhibit design and installation for small, volunteer-run museums and historical agencies in Morris County. MCHS and MCHC staff members Bonnie-Lynn Nadzeika, Debra Westmoreland and Carrie Fellows will provide tips and tricks to help small organizations make the most of their time and money. They will demonstrate tools and tips for creating text panels that look like a million bucks for only a few bucks. They will discus sources for inexpensive frames and small exhibit cases from unlikely sources. In addition they will show how materials from the local hardware store can be used to create low-cost panels and partitions.Reservations are required and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. In partnership with the Morris County Human Relations Commission, the Society will sponsor an afternoon highlighting cultural traditions from around the world. Music, dancing and art demonstrations will be held. Ethnic foods will be available for sampling.

Be Our Guest

At Acorn Hall
Acorn Hall will be part of the third annual Be Our Guest event, a free open house of Morris County's museums, historic sites and cultural attractions. Free transportation will be available between Acorn Hall, the Morris Museum, Washington's Headquarters, Schuyler-Hamiton House, Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, Historic Speedwell and Craftsman Farms. While there is no admission fee, visitors are asked to bring a non-perishable food item as part of a food drive to benefit the Interfaith Food Pantry. Second Annual Yard Sale

The Second Annual Yard Sale will be held on the front lawn of Acorn Hall. Books, records, clothing and a variety of other items will be available. A special section will be dedicated to vintage jewelry. NO EARLY BIRDS!

General William Winds - Lecture and Cemetery Tour

At the First Presbyterian Church of Rockaway
Come and learn about Morris County's only Revolutionary War general. Local historian Don Kiddoo will present a lecture and show artifacts relating to General Winds (pronounced why-nds) and Rob Nichols will give a tour of the historical cemetery where Winds and other war veterans are interred. Light refreshments will be served. The program is free of charge, donations will be accepted to support the Rockaway Food Closet. Co-sponored by the Denville Historical Society and Museum, First Presbyterian Church of Rockaway, and the Rockaway Borough Historical Committee.

Gallery Talk - Out of the Closet: An Art Collection Revealed

At Acorn Hall
MCHS Curator Debra Westmoreland will be joined by MCHS intern Mary Hauser-Kropa in presenting an informative look at the Society's art collection currently on view in the exhibit gallery. They will discuss the background of select pieces, their history and recent restoration work that was done to preserve several of the pieces.
