Costume and Textile Care Workshop

6-8 p.m.
At the Frelinghuysen Arboretum

This workshop is offered free of charge exclusively for volunteers at local historical organizations in Morris County. Tips and techniques will be offered about caring for costume and textile collections. Presenters include MCHS curator Debra Westmoreland and Carrie Fellows, Executive Director, Macculloch Hall Museum.

Enjoy a three course, sit down tea served amid the splendor of Acorn Hall.  Seating is limited, reservations are required. $25 for MCHS members, $30 for non-members. Please reserve by Thursday, September 23.

Costume Workshop

12:30-3:30 p.m.
At the Frelinghuysen Arboretum
Interested in dressing up as a Southern Belle for Halloween? Looking to make your own authentic costume to wear at your historic site? This workshop is for you. Participants will learn where to find authentic patterns, appropriate fabrics, and specialty items to create their own period wardrobe. Each participant will leave with a packet of information and fabric samples. $10 for non-members, $5 for MCHS members. Reservations required.

Victorian Fashion Plate Workshop

At the Frelinghuysen Arboretum
During the Victorian era, women would take fashion plates out of magazines and "dress" the figures using scraps of fabric, lace, ribbon and other trims. Participants in the workshop will "dress" a reproduction image in this same manner. A fun workshop for anyone who has dreamed of being a fashion designer! Ages 12+.

If you are a fan of the incredible holiday decorations at Acorn Hall, now is your chance to create a special holiday decoration for your own home. Participants will decorate a silk holiday wreath just like the ones created each year for Acorn Hall. The workshop price includes all materials and supplies, including wreath, ribbons and other decorative items. Make one for yourself, or one as a gift! Reservations are required.

This year there will be more opportunities than ever to see Acorn Hall decorated in its holiday finery. In addition to being open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, Acorn Hall will be open on Fridays from 1 to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from  12 to 4 p.m.

Meet some of the New Jersey farmers and artisans who produce the food on your table at “Local Harvest,” a celebration of the farms of northern New Jersey. Meet farmers, watch chef demos, sample and purchase local food, and learn about north Jersey’s agricultural heritage past and present.  Learn about CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and sign up for a share of the 2010 harvest.  Co-sponsored by the Morris County Park Commission and the Northern New Jersey chapter of Slow Food USA

Acorn Hall Clean-up Day

10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
At Acorn Hall

You can help out at a much-needed Clean-Up Day at Acorn Hall. We’ll be joined by a team of volunteers from Moretrench, a nationally known geotechnical contractor.Many hands make light work, so  we welcome all participants. Projects will include touch-up painting, cleaning outdoor furniture, clearing debris from the yard, and plenty of other jobs large and small. Most of the work will be in the yard, the basement of Acorn Hall, and the carriage house. We’ll need all kinds of skills, from organizational to heavy lifting and probably a bit of everything in between. If you have a special skill that you think would be beneficial, please let us know and we can put you to work accordingly. Plan to “dress for mess” and bring a pair of work gloves if you have them. Refreshments will be served. Call the office to R.S.V.P.

Be Our Guest

Acorn Hall will be part of the third annual Be Our Guest event, a free open house of Morris County's museums, historic sites, and cultural attractions. Free transportation will be available between Acorn Hall, the Morris Museum, Washington's Headquarters, Schuyler-Hamilton House, Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, Historic Speedwell, and Craftsman Farms. While there is no admission fee, visitors are asked to bring a non-perishable food item as part of a food drive to benefit the Interfaith Food Pantry. Gowns! - Exhibit Opens

At Acorn Hall
The Society's latest exhibit will feature wedding gowns, evening gowns, christening gowns, even nightgowns! Drawing on the Society's vast costume collection, the exhibit promises to delight!  The exhibit will be open on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays during its run.

Annual Giralda Lawn Concert

At Giralda Farms Corporate Park
3 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Join MCHS at the Arts Council of the Morris Area’s annual Giralda Concert. The concert will be held at the Giralda Farms Corporate Park in Madison. The gates open at 3 p.m. and attendees can enjoy an art show, refreshments, family activities, and MCHS’s own Victorian textile arts display and demonstration booth. The concert, performed by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, will begin at 6 p.m. Advance tickets are $12 for adults, $4 for children under 12, while tickets at the gate will be $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

Have so many weekend commitments that you cannot get to Acorn Hall on a Sunday afternoon? Do you keep meaning to get to MCHS exhibits but between work and family never find the time? Problem solved! Acorn Hall will be open on Thursday evenings in July until 7 p.m. Stop by for a tour, shopping or to see the fabulous exhibit, Gowns: From Birth to Bedroom to Ballroom. Regular admission rates apply. Last tour begins at 6:15.

Old Fashioned Fun Day

1-4 p.m.
At Acorn Hall
Enjoy a day of family fun at Acorn Hall. Special kids tours of Acorn Hall, games on the lawn, Victorian dress-up, tea and cookies, and a take-home craft. Regular admission prices apply.
